Sperm Donation / Preservation
Sperm Donation: sperm samples are donated and frozen for use by couples in which the man does not have sperm cells in his ejaculate (Azoospermia).
The men donating the semen are screened for infections, blood group and genotype are done followed up by a semen analysis. if screening tests are okay, then they are recruited to produce their semen for storage.
Semen samples can be frozen by the use of a sperm freezing medium that protect the sperm cells from freezing damage during storage in -196 •c liquid Nitrogen in the storage .
Men that will not be available during the IVF treatment cycle can freeze their semen samples for use during the treatment. Men that cannot produce semen samples on demand are usually advised to freeze their semen samples to solve the problem of stress and absence of sperm on the day of egg collection. Men undergoing cancer treatment freeze their semen samples to preserve their fertility which may be affected after treatment. The samples can now be thawed when they are ready to start a family and used in fertility treatment.
