Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI): Some few decades ago men with low sperm count have very low chance of impregnating their spouses. The advent of ICSI revolutionized the treatment of infertility with propounding success.

The crucial step in fertilization of an egg is the attachment and fusion of sperm to the membrane of the egg. Due to variety of reasons, this attachment and fusion may not be possible.

ICSI makes it possible for this crucial attachment process to be bypassed by injecting a single sperm in the cytoplasm of a matured egg to achieve fertilization. The fertilized eggs are grown in an incubator in the laboratory for 5 days before the embryo are transferred into the womb of the woman.

Why ICSI ?

ICSI helps to overcome the following fertility challenges:

  1. When the male partners produce few sperm cells
  2. Poor motility of sperm cells
  3. Failure of fertilization with conventional IVF
  4. Advanced maternal age
